Why does my toddler wake at 3am? A calm guide to night waking

Published January 10, 2026

If your toddler has started waking in the small hours after months of sleeping through, you're not doing anything wrong — and it almost always has a cause you can find. The 3am wake-up feels random at 3am. It rarely is.

The usual suspects

Most sudden night waking at this age traces back to one of a handful of things:

  • A later bedtime. Overtiredness fragments the second half of the night. Counterintuitively, an earlier bedtime often means longer sleep.
  • Too much light. Toddler sleep is very light-sensitive. A sliver of dawn or a hallway glow can be enough to flip the switch.
  • A developmental leap. New skills — walking, talking, big imagination — have a way of showing up at night.
  • Routine changes. A dropped nap, travel, illness, or a new sibling can all ripple into the night.

What tends to help

Start by protecting the rhythm you already have. If naps are steady, keep them — they're doing the heavy lifting. Then look at the two biggest levers:

Bring bedtime earlier

Try moving bedtime 15–20 minutes earlier for a week. If overtiredness is the culprit, you'll often see the night waking ease within a few days.

Darken the room

Blackout covering for windows settles light-triggered early waking surprisingly often. You'll know it's working when your child starts pushing past their usual wake time.

When your toddler does wake, go in, offer quick and calm reassurance, and leave. Boring is the goal.

When to look a little closer

If waking comes with pain, fever, or distress that won't settle, it's worth ruling out teething, illness, or discomfort — and checking with your doctor if you're unsure. Frequently asked

Why has my toddler suddenly started waking at night?
Sudden night waking is usually triggered by something specific: a later bedtime causing overtiredness, a developmental leap, teething, a change in routine, or too much light in the room. Most causes resolve within a week or two once you spot the trigger.
Should I go in when my toddler wakes at night?
Yes, but keep it brief and boring. Calm, low-key reassurance tells your child they're safe without making the waking more interesting. Long, stimulating interactions can accidentally reinforce the habit.
